Zote is a traveller from outside Hallownest who came to the Kingdom to fulfill a promise. This is ultimately revealed to be a promise of glory for himself. He named his nail "Life Ender" because names supposedly have power. Unfortunately, because it is made of shellwood, it cannot deal damage. While he claims to be the strongest warrior in the land, he is found trapped by weak enemies or claiming the glory of another bug's deeds. He regards the Knight as beneath him and accuses them of constantly getting in his way.

Found along the path leading to Greenpath. He is held in the mandibles of a Vengefly King, and the Knight has the choice to either save him or leave him. If saved, he complains that the Knight got in the way between him and his "prey", he introduces himself and boasts about his supposed mighty deeds.

If he is not saved before acquiring the Mantis Claw, he dies in this location, with his nail and shell remaining. Hitting his shell here grants the Neglect achievement.

If he is saved in Greenpath, Zote shows up in Dirtmouth, where he once again talks to the Knight in an arrogant fashion.

Zote can be found in a corridor leading back to the storerooms of the City of Tears. He has forgotten the Knight and introduces himself again.

Found stuck in spider webs, presumably having been captured by the beasts of Deepnest. Once again the Knight has the choice to either save him or leave him, though this time leaving him does not result in his death. If saved, he once again complains about the Knight meddling in his supposed heroics.

If the Knight saves him both times, he is captured and can be found in the resting area of the Colosseum of Fools, where he brags about his skills and how his capture was part of his plan. He then becomes the final boss of the first trial. As a boss, he deals no damage due to his nail being made of shellwood. He simply has to be attacked until the fight is over. He is quite inept in combat and regularly messes up his jumps. Beating him grants the Rivalry achievement.
Needle is the term used to describe the bladed weapon wielded by Hornet. The needle is attached with a thread of silk.
For so long I've felt drawn here. So many tales full of wonders and horrors. No longer could I resist. I just had to see it for myself.
– Quirrel
Shardmites are enemies in Hollow Knight. Formerly used in Crystal Peak's mining operations, these creatures now wander around on walls, feeding on crystal dust. Crawls up and down on vertical surfaces. Upon approaching it, it sprouts long crystal spikes from its shell. While those spikes are extended, it is invulnerable. By attacking quickly, it can be taken off guard and killed before it sprouts its spikes. It is also possible to Nail-bounce off its spikes by down-slashing. With repeated down-slashing, the Shardmite retracts its spikes briefly before sprouting them again, giving the Knight a chance to get in a hit between spikes while keeping distance.

Quirrel is an inquisitive, up-beat explorer, fascinated by the myths of Hallownest for reasons he cannot explain. While he remains a simple observer, he is wise of the land's dangers and has some skill with a nail.[1]

Lore

Before the fall of Hallownest, Quirrel used to be Monomon’s apprentice.[3] When Monomon became a Dreamer, she entrusted Quirrel with her mask, which was part of an additional protection enacted upon herself.[4] Quirrel can be seen wearing this mask on top of his head. In the official comic, it is shown that Quirrel ended up outside of Hallownest.

Quirrel fighting Hornet

Quirrel lost much of his memory eventually.[5] He was called back to Hallownest by Monomon in order to reverse the protection placed on her.[4] After helping Boon fight off some bugs and travelling with them for some time, they part ways. He had dreams of Hallownest; the City of Tears, Fog Canyon, the Forgotten Crossroads, the Temple of the Black Egg, and the Hollow Knight. After entering the Howling Cliffs, Quirrel meets Hornet, whom he briefly fights. Hornet allows Quirrel to enter Hallownest when she recognizes Monomon’s mask.

Quirrel can initially be found at the Temple of the Black Egg, but he can be encountered in several locations around Hallownest. After helping the Knight kill Monomon by removing the protection on her, he goes to the Blue Lake to see the source of the rain in the City of Tears.[6]

In the Temple of the Black Egg

Quirrel is first met staring at the Black Egg in wonder. He briefly talks about how he feels drawn to Hallownest.[7] He is aware that both the Knight and himself are ill-equipped for this perilous journey. He explains that many travellers have come down into the ruins and fallen, and lightly suggests that they may have useful belongings that the Knight could use.[8] He leaves if the Knight enters the room west of the False Knight.

Lake of Unn

Quirrel is found sitting on a rock next to the Bench inside the structure, polishing his nail. He tells the Knight that their Nail is looking a little worn and that they may not fare as well below the surface.[9] He leaves if the Knight acquires the Mantis Claw.

Queen's Station

Inside the station, Quirrel can be found sitting on the edge of a platform above the entrance to the Stagway. He comments on the activity such place must have had during the kingdom's peak.[10] He leaves if the Knight acquires the Mantis Claw or leaves Queen's Station.

Mantis Village

If the Knight has entered the deeper part of the Mantis Village where the Mantis Lords can be found, Quirrel can be encountered in the east part of Mantis Village. He hints at seeking out the Nailsmith before proceeding further past the boss fight.[11] He leaves if the Knight defeats the Mantis Lords, enters the City of Tears, enters Deepnest, or listens to him in Mantis Village.

Pondering about the rain in the City of Tears

Quirrel is found sitting on a Bench on the way out of the first building in the City of Tears, looking out the window. He tells the Knight he feels pulled into the city, but is hesitant to enter, not knowing why.[12] He mentions the water coming down endlessly from above and that he wants to see where it comes from before he leaves the Kingdom.[6] He leaves if the Knight defeats Soul Master or later encounters him in Crystal Peak.

Deepnest

Quirrel is found resting in the Hot Spring in Deepnest after the Failed Tramway has been visited. He hints at the existence of a village in Deepnest, home to those who never accepted Hallownest's King.[13] He leaves if the Knight listens to him.

Crystal Peak

Quirrel is found standing next to a huge window at the peak, looking down onto Dirtmouth, pondering. He also comments on the sad fate of the Infected miners relentlessly at their endless task.[14] He leaves if the Knight acquires the Crystal Heart or later encounters him in the City of Tears.

Outside the Teacher's Archives

Quirrel is found just outside the entrance to the Teacher's Archives, somewhat confused, feeling drawn inside.[15] After entering this room, he can no longer be found at any of the prior locations in Hallownest. He later appears during the Uumuu boss fight to help the Knight by puncturing the outer membrane of the boss, allowing the Knight to damage them.

Before Monomon

After inspecting the tank that Monomon the Teacher is inside, Quirrel jumps up from below. He explains the history of the Teacher and that he played a part in her protection. He holds up his hat, which is revealed to be Monomon's mask, and undoes that protection to help the Knight.[4] If the Knight has not yet acquired the Dream Nail, Quirrel suggests they find the Moth Tribe to learn from them how to enter Monomon's mind and break her seal.[16] After Monomon is killed, he sits there until the Knight leaves. He does not wear Monomon's mask again after this encounter.

Blue Lake

Quirrel and the Knight at the Blue Lake

In the final encounter with Quirrel, he is found sitting next to the Blue Lake, as he said he would want to see where the rainwater is coming from in the City of Tears. He tells the Knight that now, after seeing the world twice over, he finally feels at peace, and he is thankful he could see its beauty again.[17]

After the conversation, the Witness achievement is received and the Knight can choose to sit next to him in silence.

After leaving the room, Quirrel disappears. His nail can be seen planted into the ground beside the Lake.

The Love Key is an Item in Hollow Knight.

Use

Opens the door inside the Tower of Love where the Collector can be fought.

Hornet is the mysterious princess-protector of Hallownest’s ruins, a major character in Hollow Knight and the playable protagonist of Hollow Knight: Silksong. She wields a Needle and thread with deadly prowess.

Hornet is captured by outsider bugs and brought to their kingdom, Pharloom, but she escapes her cage before arriving at their destination. She then must battle foes and solve mysteries to ascend on a deadly pilgrimage to this kingdom's peak.

Health is represented as Masks, shown in the upper-left corner of the screen. Hornet starts the game with 5 Masks and can obtain more. Health is lost by taking damage, either from enemies or from environmental hazards. Health can be regained by the use of the Bind ability consuming a full Silk spool.

Lifeblood Masks, granted by Lifeblood needles, are temporary masks.

Silk is represented as a spool below the health indicator. Thread is consumed when using special abilities, including a form of Focus named Bind. Striking enemies with the Needle fills the spool by two laces. When the spool is full, the symbol representing the side of the spool left to the health indicator is filled.

The Needle is Hornet's main weapon. Not only can she use it to slash or block attacks against enemies, but also to dash forward, stab, and bounce up above them. She can also use it alongside her abilities to deal greater damage or as a grappling hook.

Tools are special items classed by categories, equipped on a Crest with limited slots. They can be used as throwing weapons or defensive aids without costing Silk. Crests and Tools can be changed when sitting on a Bench similar to Charms.

Abilities consume Silk thread to use them.

Hornet can collect and keep various items throughout her journey, which are stored in her inventory. They can be related to specific quests.

The following areas have no confirmed name, although the names used were mentioned in the official announcement. Other mentioned names include "Bonebottom", "Moss Temple", and "Soaring Warlord's Tower": "Coral Forest", "Gilded City", and "Lake of Fire/Bone Forest".

Garmond and Zaza are two NPCs first revealed in the Hollow Knight: Silksong announcement trailer. They are on a quest to find a new home. Garmond appears to be the rider, while Zaza appears to be mount.

Garmond and Zaza only appear once in the announcement trailer; they are seen during the "New Quests" segment. Within a dark, murky hallway with a visible curved lattice pattern in the background, Hornet is shown leaping over the two as they charge forward through a small group of enemies, while Garmond makes a loud vocalization.

They were later revealed in a blog post, which states that the two are on a quest to find a new home. Garmond is described as being rambunctious and chatty, while Zaza is noted to possibly be "the brains" of the two.

Elder Hu was a travelling sage who sought to purify the borderlands of Hallownest from the Infection. He reached the Mantis Village, but his own Infected mind made him see the Mantis Lords and the Tribe as afflicted by the plague. The Mantises killed him after he attacked them. A memorial was erected in his name above the gates to the City of Tears, his tunic and bead necklace resting on top of it.

The spirit of Elder Hu can be fought at his memorial after acquiring the Dream Nail. Still deluded in his experience with the Mantis Tribe, he warns the Knight. After his defeat, the spirit becomes aware of his madness-driven mistake. He realizes his own death before shattering into 100 Essence to be collected by the Dream Nail.

Elder Hu has two attacks in addition to being able to teleport:

Ring Slam: Elder Hu summons a row of rings in midair, interspersed with several safe gaps, before quickly slamming them all down onto the ground simultaneously.

Ring Curtain: Elder Hu summons pairs of rings that slam down on the ground, beginning from the edges of the arena and moving towards the centre.

Teleport: Elder Hu warps from one area to another to avoid attacks or set up his own.

The ring attacks require very precise movements to dodge as they come out quickly. The Shade Cloak is highly recommended, although not completely necessary. Elder Hu remains in place during the attacks, and his floating pattern is low enough to the ground, where attacking with the Nail is possible. Dodge the rings and get in some hits in between. Eventually, the rhythm of the attacks is easy to follow and the Knight should have no problem timing dashes and attacks.

Alternatively, the Knight can use Shade Cloak to dodge the Ring Slam attack and use Howling Wraiths/Abyss Shriek along with a Spell build (such as Shaman Stone, Spell Twister, Soul Catcher, and Soul Eater) to quickly finish him off.

How to Acquire

"Too long... spent together. We become as one..."

Dialogue

Temple - Mantis Village
Outside the Black Egg Hello there! How delightful to meet another traveller on these forgotten roads.

You're a short one, but you've a strong look about you.
I'm Quirrel. I have something of an obsession with uncharted places.
This ancient kingdom holds many fascinating mysteries, and one of the most intriguing of them is standing right before us.
A great stone egg, lying in the corpse of an ancient kingdom. And this egg...Is it warm? It certainly gives off a unique air.
Can it be opened? There are strange marks all over it...
I do so love a mystery...And who knows what other marvels lie even deeper below us...

Listening again For so long I've felt drawn here. So many tales full of wonders and horrors. No longer could I resist. I just had to see it for myself.

And what a time I chose to arrive! This dead world has sprung to life.
The creatures are riled up and the earth rumbles. The air is thick. I wonder what could have brought it all about?

Listening again To persevere in this ruin, that old nail alone just won't be enough. Though that's no problem! One only has to look around.

Plenty have come before us and most have met their grisly end, many more equipped than you and I.
I'm sure they wouldn't mind were a fellow explorer to relieve them of their tools. It's a kindness really. The dead shouldn't be burdened with such things.

Listening again Did you pass that town above? What a gloomy little place. And such majesty hidden right beneath!

I suppose that's why they've all headed down here. Who could resist such possibilities?

Exhausted dialogue Truly a marvel...
Dream Nailed What is this feeling?... So familiar. Drawn forward yet repelled.

And those shapes upon the door...To gaze directly at them turns my mind to fog.

Inside the building by the Lake of Unn Oh, hello there! Seems we both tread far from the path.

I can hardly believe those dusty old highways led to such a lush and lively place!
This building suggests some form of worship, though its idol has clearly been long forgotten. Doubles equally well for a moment's respite.

Listening again I saw a strange fellow out there. He seemed quite taken by the lake.

I'd planned to offer greetings, though figured I'd first tend to my nail on chance our meeting goes poorly.

Listening again Your nail looks a fine instrument, but it's showing signs of wear.

I'd wager up there it would take you far. Down here however, I suspect you'll soon meet dangers the surface world can't match.

Exhausted dialogue Hallownest is perfect for vigilant explorers like us. So tense and thrilling. In this place, you're either alert or you're dead.
Dream Nailed That lake... a revered presence once slept deep within...

Did it? What would make me think such things?

Within the Queen Station's main room Isn't this something. I'd not expected to discover so huge a Stag Station after that foggy descent.

The bugs of Hallownest must've been an impressive lot, building such grand structures so far into these wilds.
Seems the dangerous creatures about haven't yet made their way in here. It's the perfect place for a quick rest.

Listening again Can you imagine this place in its time? Hordes of bugs travelling about the Kingdom; stag bells ringing; the station bustling with activity and life.

Now only our like even know it exists.
That's a special thing I suppose, to cherish these sights, even in their decay.

Exhausted dialogue Is it that, just faintly, you can still hear the echo of the bells?
Dream Nailed Even those great stags bowed to Hallownest's King. What devotion he must have inspired.
Listening at Mantis Village Hello again! I suppose you've already met with the tribe of this village, hmm? They seem a little distrustful of strangers... to put it lightly.

They're not brutes though, no. The sickness in the air that clouds the mind of lesser beasts... they resist it. They retain their intellect and their honour, though also their lethal traditions.
I've some words of advice, my friend. If you plan to challenge the lords of this tribe, your blunted nail may prove inadequate.
There is a city nearby, the old capital of Hallownest. I've heard a Nailsmith resides there. Seek the old bug out and you may find progress that much easier.

Exhausted dialogue My own route takes me towards that great city. If you search out the Nailsmith, it may not be long until our paths cross again.
Dream Nailed ...Who was it that told me of the Nailsmith? I can't even remember, yet I can almost picture the smith himself...

City of Tears - Resting Grounds
Listening at City of Tears The capital lies before us my friend. What a sombre place it seems and one that holds the answers to many a mystery.

I too have felt the pull of this place, though now I sit before it I find myself hesitant to descend.
Is it fear I wonder, or something else that holds me back?

Listening again The city looks to be built into an enormous cavern, and the rain pours down from cracks in the stone above.

There must be a lot of water up there somewhere. I suppose, if the cave roof stayed strong this long, it should hold for us.
Before I leave this Kingdom, I'd like to see where all that water comes from. What a sight it must be!

Listening again If you look down from here, through the rain, you can just make out those twisted sentries, their husks still stuck in endless patrol.

I'd be cautious around them my short friend. Their training will not have been forgotten. This city presents some formidable foes.

Exhausted dialogue Isn't this a wonderful spot for a rest? I so love the sound of the rain upon glass.
Dream Nailed Hallownest's heart... Magnificent even in mourning.
Listening at Crystal Peak Ahh, quite a view, no?

I'm not surprised you survived the trek through these shimmering caverns.
There's an air of strength about you. I suspect it would be quite intimidating, if not for your small stature.

Listening again Did it sadden you to see those miners below, still labouring at their endless task?

Even overcome, strong purpose has been imprinted upon their husks.
The crystal ore is said to contain a sort of energy, not as powerful as the soul the city dwellers harnessed but far less lethal.
...Strange to know such ancient facts. I wonder from where my knowledge comes?

Listening again At this high vantage I can just make it out, the light from that sad little town.

I doubt its residents could even comprehend the scale of the world that surrounds them.

Exhausted dialogue So small it seems...
Dream Nailed ...These winds cry lonely. Better the comfort of rock above one's head.
Listening at Deepnest Hello, hello! What a thrill this is, to find such warm comfort amidst the den of beasts.

This is a ferocious place no doubt. Supposedly, there's a village deep in the warren. Its inhabitants never accepted Hallownest's King.

Exhausted dialogue Why not join me for a time? These waters do wonders for weary legs.
Dream Nailed This one too must seek the village at the nest's heart. What mystery the purpose that sees it share my path.
Listening outside the Teacher's Archives Doesn't this kingdom just abound with surprises? A building atop an acid lake.

Despite the sight, I can't help but feel... familiarity? Something stirs in my mind, though I can't yet tell what..
I'd thought it my lust for discovery that led me here but now there seems something else.
This building beckons me.

Exhausted dialogue I can feel it calling... Dare I head in?
Dream Nailed ...Who are you, that leads me to this place?
Listening next to Monomon's tank Did she call you too then? I realise it's no coincidence we arrive together.

Though much of my memory is blank, this place I recall.
Within these chambers the Teacher sought to store the Kingdom's knowledge and at its core, she stored herself.
To save Hallownest, the Teacher willingly became a seal, but upon herself she enacted an additional protection.
Though I cannot recall its happening, I played a part in that feat.
She called me here, now, to reverse that protection. All in aid of you.

Listening again before acquiring the Dream Nail Ahh, but her mind is still locked to you. That final, powerful protection stays in place.

If you would attempt to break her seal, you've first to discover the means to open a mind. Such tools may exist to perform the feat, though in my own travels I've not come across one.
I'd heard it told the Kingdom's moths did delve amongst dreams and the dead. Perhaps you'd seek them out?

Listening again after acquiring the Dream Nail Do not hesitate. The choice to reform was hers, not mine.

She knows what you would do and seems to welcome it.

Listening after exiting Monomon's dream without killing her Why do you hesitate? Mercy is a fine thing, but you and her agree this must be done. Be brave, friend.
Listening after killing Monomon, exhausted dialogue The Madam's life is extinguished and with it her seal breaks.

It's a heavy thing you attempt, but I've seen your prowess up close and she too believed you capable.
Be on your journey then, and allow me rest a time. With the deed complete, I begin to feel my age.

Dream Nailed To think, such a small creature would bear this kingdom's fate.
On the east shore of the Blue Lake Again we meet, my short friend. Here at last, I feel at peace.

Twice I've seen this world and though my service may have stripped the first experience from me, I'm thankful I could witness its beauty again.
Hallownest is a vast and wondrous thing, but with as many wonders as it holds, I've seen none quite so intriguing as you.
Ha. My flattery returns only silent stoicism. I like that.
I like that very much.
...Incredible...

Dream Nailed To live an age, yet remember so little... Perhaps I should be thankful?

All tragedy erased. I see only wonders...

Ellina is an expanded universe character who appears only within the Hollow Knight Wanderer's Journal- acting as the fictional author of the book. Her book details her experiences within the kingdom of Hallownest and acts as an outside source providing some unique reflections, accounts, and opinions on her findings. Ellina's character beyond her time spent in Hallownest is not explored and is unknown.

A brief summary by the author of the book states the following:

"The book is written from the perspective of Ellina the Chronicler, an "outsider" who is documenting her observations as she travels through Hallownest. She only knows what she's learned from others during her journey, so she doesn't pick up on any deep lore."

In addition, Ellina herself provides a small introduction in her journal:

"Greetings, fellow wanderer, and welcome to Hallownest!" "It would seem you’ve happened upon my journal. This volume contains a record of my observations and musings, transcribed as I travelled into the kingdom’s depths and-through a miracle of either luck or sheer willpower-returned safely to the surface. My travels brought me to Hallownest purely out of curiosity; though I expected to find naught but a desolate ruin down below, what awaited me was quite possibly the adventure of a lifetime. To that end, I’ve chosen to leave my completed journal behind, in hopes that another brave explorer might use it to piece together the myriad of mysteries of this forsaken kingdom."

The contents of the Wanderer's Journal include images and descriptions drawn and written by Ellina detailing a variety of enemies, characters, and environments. The main descriptions are typed out and are accompanied by Ellina's "quotes" - which are written out in a handwriting style font.

Ellina's story and adventure canonically occur at the same time as the events of Hollow Knight; the Knight's quest would have been currently in progress during the time Ellina was writing her journal. Evidence of this includes an account of Bretta first encountered by Ellina stuck in the Fungal Wastes, but later on noted to be in Dirtmouth: implying that Bretta was saved by the Knight as it occurs in the game.

Despite her story happening parallel to the game's events, Ellina never meets or runs into the Knight in person during her exploration of Hallownest. The closest instance Ellina comes to encountering the Knight underground is only through noticing the painting of the Knight by Nailmaster Sheo.

However, at the very end of the novel, when Ellina plans to leave the kingdom, she does catch a glimpse of the Knight as she's returning to the surface.

Mighty Hegemol... What a towering figure he was, though surprisingly soft spoken for one so large. They were all impressive in their own right, of course. Fierce Dryya, kindly Isma, mysterious Ze'mer ... erm, and the other one.

The Five Great Knights of Hallownest once stood beneath the throne as the kingdom's protectors. They are revered figures who are often mentioned in historical records but only as a group. Information on the individual Great Knights is sparse, with Relic Seeker Lemm noting that their names and appearance seem to have been erased from history.

The Five Great Knights are:

By the time the Knight returns to Hallownest, three of the Great Knights have either died or disappeared. Only Ogrim and Ze'mer are known to be alive.

The Great Knights are depicted in Ogrim's cave below his boss arena as statues made of dung:

The silhouettes of four of them can be seen in the arena of Hidden Dreams content White Defender:

Five Great Knights Silhouettes
From left to right: Ze'mer, Dryya, Isma, and Hegemol

Ze'mer

Grey Mourner2

Located in the Resting Grounds where she is known as the "Grey Mourner", Ze'mer is the only remaining Great Knight besides Ogrim. Sheo refers to her as "mysterious Ze'mer". She is not native to Hallownest, originating from "lands serene", a location from which she also brought Delicate Flowers. There is not much known about Ze'mer when she was a Great Knight, but Ogrim remarks on how she told stories.

After her Mantis lover died, Ze'mer turned to mourning and retreated to her house in the Resting Grounds. She dissipates after the Knight delivers the Delicate Flower to the grave of her lover.

Dryya

White Knight Dead

Dryya had a hard front, and Nailmaster Sheo refers to her as "Fierce Dryya", although she is noted to have been a caring type. Ogrim mentions that he misses her wisdom. She was tasked with standing guard over the White Lady in the Queen's Gardens.

After defeating numerous Mantis Traitors, evidenced by the pile of their corpses aside Dryya's own, they eventually overwhelmed her. The White Lady is not aware of Dryya's death.

Isma

Isma

Referred to as "kindly Isma" by Nailmaster Sheo, there is little known about Isma, but her strength seemed to surpass that of Ogrim's, and her nature seemed to be kind and understanding. Ogrim and Isma had a very close relationship, even more so since he seems to be protecting her grove specifically. Isma’s powers and capabilities are not specifically stated but seem to have some relation to acid, as her tear or "blessing" grants acid immunity. Her grove is referred to as the "source of acid blight."

She can be found within the Royal Waterways, in Isma’s Grove. She appears to be dead and her body can be seen attached to a wall by plant growth; making the cause of her death the most questionable.

Hegemol

False Knight Statue

Hegemol is the only Great Knight whose whereabouts are largely unknown. He was the favourite Great Knight of Nailmaster Sheo, who calls him "Mighty Hegemol". He was a towering figure but soft spoken, which was surprising for somebody of his stature. Ogrim mentions that he misses Hegemol's humour.

A statue of Hegemol can be found outside the City of Tears, requiring the City Crest to open the gate to the city.

While Hegemol was sleeping, his armoured shell was stolen by a Maggot who wanted to defend his siblings. It is unknown whether Hegemol is alive after this or if he was murdered by the maggot. While the False Knight who stole his shell wields a mace with an armoured bug attached to the end, Hegemol himself is always shown without any weapon.

Ogrim

Dung-Defender-2

The most loyal of the Five Great Knights, Ogrim is found in the Royal Waterways where he is known as "Dung Defender". He hopes to meet the other Great Knights again and see Hallownest be reborn. Although he misses Isma in particular, he is not able to visit her grove due to his duties and an oath that he swore. Due to this, he seems to be unaware of Isma's fate and the fate of the other Great Knights.

When he is defeated five times in his dreams as Hidden Dreams content White Defender, Ogrim wonders if the line of Hallownest's Great Knights ends with him or whether it can be passed on, mentioning that he can easily imagine the Knight standing amongst the greatest heroes of the age. Ogrim disappears after this encounter, leaving behind a statue of the Knight made of dung.

Dryya promotional art

  • A fight with Dryya was planned early in development but was later cut. A Kickstarter update described her as:
"One of Hallownest's five greatest Knights and defender of the Queen’s Glade. She was driven mad by her Queen lost and the garden overrun. Still she retains her honour, offering fair challenge to the Hollow Knight: Nail against nail. A duel to the death."
  • Ogrim was revealed as a boss in a Kickstarter update with a different backstory:
"Deep in the Waterways beneath the City of Tears lurks a shunned being. Once a knight, now lost to puerile obsession: The Dung Defender. Despite his exile, the Dung Defender has for centuries maintained a self-conferred charge: the protection of his mysterious gleaming 'beloved.' Stalwart and full of bravado, the Dung defender eagerly challenges all who would enter his noxious realm."
  • In early development, Herrah the Beast was named Hegemol. This was later changed to her current name.

I've heard a Nailsmith resides there. Seek the old bug out and you may find progress that much easier."
